Why I'll Never Be An Influencer

In the age of social media, it's easy to become trapped in an online persona.

Posting every passing thought on Twitter. Spending hours taking photos to get that ONE to post to Instagram. (You know, the one that looks like a candid shot but was really the result of hundreds of poses and thousands of images filling your camera roll.) Attending an event and pulling out your camera to document your presence. YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Insta stories - pick your poison.

I actually have the opposite problem of most. I can't seem to get myself to post.

It's not that I don't like to use social media. It's just that I like living more.

I'm selfish. Any time something exciting happens in my life, rather than having the instinct to share that moment with everyone, I choose to cherish it alone or with close friends and family only. But would I ever change that about myself? Absolutely not.

I've seen online creator after online creator bemoan their toxic relationship with social media, and praise time away from it as a cure for their mental health ills. But for me, this is something that I've never really felt the need to do, simply because I have never found myself deep enough into my social media feeds that the connection becomes unhealthy.

I truly believe that humans were never meant to be this interconnected. It shouldn't even be conceivable that someone in one part of the world can write out a single thought, and someone else oceans away can have paragraphs of opinion on that thought. Yet here we are - and for many, the opinions of others all the way across the world dominate their every waking moment.

Do you control your social feeds or do they control you?

+ + + + + + + + + + +

I explore that question and talk about my own personal relationship with social media in today's video.

I also chatted about this topic with viewers live on Twitch. If you want to participate in future livestreams, follow me at http://twitch.tv/emsarcade!
